I have a special treat for you today - a different kind of creating - my Great Grandmother's Sugar Cookie Recipe.
I served these cookies at my Make-It-Monday class this week and everyone wanted the recipe, so I figured I'd just post it here on the blog for you all.
I've been making these cookies ever since I was a little girl, mostly with my Grandma, although sometimes my Mom and I would do the honors. But no matter who is in the kitchen, each Christmas, without fail, we bake Grandma Nicely's Sugar Cookies.
I never met her, but there's a part of her here with every Christmas that passes. I make them now with my daughter, using my Grandma's cookie cutters, passing on the tradition that someday she'll pass on to her child.
I created this 6" x 6" recipe card several years ago for a swap at the SU! Convention. Most of it was done using My Digital Studio, but it's a hybrid project because of the stamping and embellishments.
This is me, my daughter and my Mom in a photo from about 2004.
When my daughter and I pulled out some of our Christmas cookie recipes the day after Thanksgiving, we found this handwritten copy among a stack of recipes that we kept from my Mom's estate.
The top portion is my Grandmother's handwriting, the bottom section, my Mom's.
I'm so glad I went through those papers, I'll treasure this always.
I'll type out the cookie recipe at the bottom of this post so you have a clear, updated copy.

This card was made with a stamp set called Apple of my Eye. I paired it with some fun bright colors and the Brushstrokes Background Stamp.

Here's the sugar cookie recipe for you: (slightly modified)
Grandma Nicely's Sugar Cookies
Ingredients:
1 cup Butter
1 1/2 cup Sugar
3 Eggs
1 tsp. Vanilla Extract
3 1/2 cups All-Purpose Flour
2 tsp. Cream of Tartar
1 tsp. Baking Soda
1/2 tsp. Salt
Food Coloring
Cookie Decors
Directions:
Soften Butter, combine with Sugar, Eggs and Vanilla in stand mixer or large bowl.
Mix well.
In a separate bowl, combine Flour, Cream of Tartar, Baking Soda and Salt.
Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture.
Beat all ingredients well. Dough will be very thick.
Separate dough into sections and add food coloring if desired.
Roll dough sections in waxed paper and chill for 2 hours.
Ready to bake? Roll and cut out with cookie cutters. Use extra flour if needed to handle the dough. Do not over flour!
Dough should remain cool for best results. It will keep in the refrigerator for up to a week, the freezer for a month.
Bake cookies in a 350 degree oven for 8-12 minutes. Decorate as desired.
It's my favorite time of the year for a number of reasons. My husband and I were married in December. My daughter was born in December. And it's the time of year we celebrate the birth of Christ.
Christmas is a magical, fun filled season and I love everything about it - even if it's not always the most peaceful time of year for me.
It's easy to get caught up in the busy-ness of it all - the parties, festivities and activities can leave you desperate to catch your breath.
I was reflecting on all that tonight as I worked in my studio on some projects for the coming months.

The soft tones of the Smoky Slate and Wisteria Wonder are so soothing that you can't help but think of "peace" when you see them together.
Add a little bling and you have a taste of the sparkling magic that makes Christmas truly the most wonderful time of the year.

Just popping by today with a quick card for you all. I designed this last week for my stamp classes this month and it's been a big hit so far! It uses the sweet stencil from the Summer Smooches promotion that's going on this month. The stencil is one of two items that is only available this month, so be sure to add it on when you are ordering your retired stamp sets!
Let's take a look at the card:
I used Crumb Cake cardstock cut at 4 1/4" x 11" and folded in half for my card base. Using the outside piece of the stencil, I took a Sponge Dauber and sponged Crumb Cake ink on the card front through the stencil opening to create this sweet shadowed background.
The side border piece is made with Daffodil Delight cardstock layered with a piece of the Summer Smooches Designer Series Paper. I wrapped a short piece of Daffodil Delight Seam Binding around the layers before adhering them to the card front.
Next, I used a new piece of seam binding and created a bow which was attached to the wrap with Mini Glue Dots. The greeting is from the Friendly Phrases stamp set and is stamped with Lucky Limeade on Very Vanilla cardstock. I punched it out with the Large Oval Punch and layered it on a piece of Crumb Cake cardstock that was punched with the Scalloped Oval Punch. The little Daffodil Delight button from the Brights collection was added with a Mini Glue Dot and the whole thing was popped up on Stampin' Dimensionals.
I used a small portion of the stencil on the inside as well to add some interest there.

I have a confession to make. I really dislike gnomes. I do not think they are cute. I do not think they are funny and they do not make me smile. Well, the Travelocity gnome on tv makes me smile, but HE is not cute and someone else is doing his voice, so it really doesn't count.
So when I expressed my dislike of gnomes at a recent team event (after discovering a new gnome stamp set in the Occasions Mini) I was heckled pretty good. Apparently the rest of the world likes gnomes and I'm the oddball. So be it, I just don't like them. And if SU! had just come out with a stamp set of gnome images, I wouldn't have looked twice. BUT, they came out with a companion set of greetings that makes me laugh out loud. You know I like offbeat humor and sadly, I needed the gnome images to make the greetings work. Sigh. I did not want to spend my hard earned $$ or even my freebies on this gnome stamp set. BUT, along comes SU! with an incentive to earn them for FREE. Now I'm all over that, so I did it. I earned them and gladly plunked down my $$ for the greeting set just so I could tell someone that I was "hanging with my gnomies". Yeah, it had to be done.
Anyway, the card I'm sharing today is a pretty simple one - I included it with a gift of gnome salt and pepper shakers that I sent to my heckler in chief for Christmas. Check out that greeting:
Cute, huh? My card is made with Lucky Limeade cardstock and I stamped it partially with the Woodgrain background stamp in Early Espresso. Some of that way cool polka-dot Chocolate Chip ribbon was wrapped around the card front and tied off in a knot. Had to make it cute somehow! Sheesh! For the greeting, I stamped it in Early Espresso on Whisper White cardstock and punched it out with the Decorative Label Punch. It was trimmed in half and adhered just under the ribbon band.
Keeping the woodland color scheme, I stamped the gnome image (cute frog!) with Basic Black on more Whisper White. I colored him in with Stampin' Write Markers - Always Artichoke, Sahara Sand, Pumpkin Pie and Chocolate Chip. The froggie is Lucky Limeade. It's mounted on a piece of Pumpkin Pie cardstock and popped up with Stampin' Dimensionals.
I added a piece of Whisper White cardstock to the inside to write my greeting so I stamped a bit of the gnome on the inside left corner and colored him in too.
So there you have it. I'd love to know what you think about gnomes. Am I the only non-gnomer?

Actually, Fair Oaks mall and Potomac Mills mall and Wal-Mart. And a near rear-end accident (again!) on a wet road. (note to other drivers - I do NOT need yet another new bumper for Christmas!) And driving to skating practice and a Christmas Party. And sorting and wrapping presents.
I am a tad tired today. I have also decided that if it's not bought by now, it's not gonna be. Things were going so well when I "thought" I had 99.9% of my Christmas shopping done before Thanksgiving. There I go thinking again! Ha!
So, to take my mind off Christmas - at least for the moment, you should see the pile of gifts still to wrap - I'm sharing a little sneak peek of some new Occasions Mini catalog products with you today! It's a sweet, simple card, but I LOVE it! And I hope you will too!
I started with Whisper White cardstock and embossed it with my Big Shot and the hearts from the NEW Adorning Accents Embossing Folders. They are 5 1/2" long so they will cover a whole card front! Isn't that cool? And there are 3 designs in one pack - awesome!
The greeting is stamped with Real Red ink and comes from the NEW Sweet Cake stamp set. I loved how the retro feel of this greeting complimented the silhouette image so well. Speaking of the silhouette image - it's NEW too! It's from the Take It to Heart stamp set which has 4 different heart images and a sweet banner image. And if you're wondering how I cut out that heart shape, well.......... Stampin' Up! has NEW Framelits! They are wafer thin dies that work with our Big Shot to perfectly cut out a stamped image. The Hearts Collection has 6 different sizes in one package! You simply stamp your image then lay it on the Big Shot with the platform and cutting pads. Select the size die you need and lay it in place over the area you want to cut out. Awesome and EASY!
For this card, I added some Dazzling Diamonds glitter to the edge of the heart before mounting it on Stampin' Dimensionals over a wrapped piece of Real Red Satin Ribbon. Don't you love it?!!

So, I know that things are a bit crazy being just 3 days before Christmas and all, I know they are here for me too. BUT, in all the craziness, all the rushing and madness and losing my mindness remember, God is still God. He is still on His throne. He is holding us tight and loving us every minute of every day. His son Jesus is who we celebrate during this special season and He came not only to bring us salvation, but peace and joy!

It's not a Christmas song - I'll have one of those for you on Christmas Day - but it's one of my favorites when I seem to lose sight of the TRUTH in my life that I've just shared with you. Actually, it's not, but I'm a good Mom, so what can I say? Stampers, as I write this post, my basement is filled with singing, dancing, squealing and non-stop talking teenage girls. So pardon me if my normal witty comments are replaced by hopeless gibberish.
Yes, I love my daughter so much I let her have a sleepover party for her 14th birthday. WHAT was I thinking???
Actually, so far, it's not so bad. They have plenty of food - pizza, wings, chips, dip, soda - enough to keep them going until midnight when the lights go OUT! Yeah, I'm mean like that.
Anyway, now that the presents have been ripped open and the cupcakes consumed, I can show you the card I made for my girl. We had our family birthday celebration on Wednesday, her actual birthday and it was nice to celebrate in a quieter way. Mark's Dad and Step-mom came up to celebrate with us and it was great to have them here. We missed not having the rest of the grands here as well, but that's just how it is sometimes. So, here's the card:
Emma is an aspiring writer and I knew her birthday card should reflect that so I turned to a brand new stamp set to make it happen. The awesome vintage typewriter image comes from a new stamp set coming out in January called You're My Type. I stamped it here on Naturals Ivory cardstock with Versamark and heat embossed it with Black EP. I used the birthday greeting from the set to add the words to the "paper" in Melon Mambo ink. It's mounted on Melon Mambo cardstock and popped up over the background and accents.
I used a strip of First Edition Designer Paper and added a torn strip of Flirtatious Designer Fabric to the back side of it. I tied another thin strip of fabric into a bow and added it with Mini Glue Dots to the paper strip. The background was stamped with a much loved, retired favorite of mine - Tres Chic. I cannot part with this beautiful background stamp and it proved it's worth once again here. It was perfect stamped in Melon Mambo on Naturals Ivory. I love the text contrast it provides to the type style of the Designer Paper and the greeting. Love it!
My card base is Melon Mambo and on the inside I placed a panel of Naturals Ivory to write my message on. I added just a portion of the small background stamp A to Z to the bottom right corner.
Emma loved her special card and she "got it" right away! Yay!
So, now I'm off to make sure the squealing masses are good to go for the night. It's been a good week.

If you're reading this post in the morning, then I'm most likely headed north to the York, PA area for the day. I'm going with Emma and my friend Michelle for a day that will include stamping, eating and shopping! Don't know what could be better - do you? So, because I'm on the road, I had to schedule this post so you didn't miss your creative fix today. See how I take care of you? Yeah, I know, it's the little things.....
I also realized that I haven't posted a single photo of our Stampin' Up! Alaska Cruise. But honestly, did you miss that? Well in case you did, here's a few to start with.
This photo was taken from the wooden bridge in Ketchikan - also known as Creek St. Guess this is the creek. But isn't it gorgeous? It actually reminded me of some of the scenery in the Shenandoah Valley here in Virginia and made me a little homesick. On our trip, I wore my Dad's Army dog tags every day. He always wanted to visit Alaska and I figured I could take him with me in a way. We set sail exactly one month from the day he died and my birthday on the cruise was one month from his funeral. I did try not to think of it, but how do you just block that out? Our trip was wonderful, truly, but was very bittersweet for me. So seeing this creek and the mossy bank and the trees and rocks, made me miss home and my Dad even more, but it really was beautiful and I'm glad we got to see it.
This photo of Whale Park was one that I HAD to take. The lovely, BLOOMING flowers really took me by surprise. I really didn't expect to see such bright, verdant colors at this time of year in Alaska. I think this setting looks like it could be in any American city in the Spring. More reminders of home for me - when we left Virginia, Spring was in full force and the flowers were amazing. It was great to see some of that there too.
This next picture needs some explaining. We went into an independent bookstore in Ketchikan and spent about an hour nosing around and finding cool things. Well, Mark called out to me and said to come over to him. When I got there, he was holding this book with a very wry look on his face. (I know he was thinking of our dog, Susie.) Yeah, I really did have to take that picture. The eye roll was all his - my husband the comedian!
Last picture for today - here's Me, Mark and Emma on the Creek St. Bridge. I love my family.

This card is one that I cased from Stampin' Connection - a demonstrator only website that is jam-packed with ideas! The original design was by Linda Pittman and I was thrilled to discover such a great design! I did tweak it a bit, but the basic idea is cased.
This card is showcasing the New Pennant Builder Punch and the Perfect Pennants stamp set. Just 3 more days and you can order them! Are you getting excited? I am! You NEED that new catalog in your hands! I think I know someone who can help you out with that.......
Anyway, I stamped the greeting with the Oval All stamp set and punched it out with the Scalloped Oval Punch. The Whisper White layer was run through the Big Shot with the Perfect Polka Dots Embossing Folder. The pennants were punched and layered then strung on a piece of Whisper White Baker's Twine. I wrapped the ends around two Rhinestone Fire Squares Brads to hang the pennant banner on the card. At my June Downline Team meeting, everyone got to make this card and they all had fun with it! The new products were a big hit which tells me that you are going to love them too!

Ok, so since you can't stand it - I'll bet YOU were a lot of fun on Christmas Day. C'mon, tell me. How many gifts did you open up and rewrap before the big day? Huh? Fess up, you KNOW who you are! My Dad had an uncanny knack for being able to pick up his gifts, already wrapped, not even shake them and tell us exactly what was in the package! I'll never forget the Christmas when he picked up a box and said "Here's my new robe. And it's a BLUE robe too!" My Mom about fell over because he was exactly right. Big stinker! But it was always fun seeing how close he would come to figuring out his gifts.
Anyway, enough of that, I'm starting to feel sad and I don't want to feel sad when I'm giving you a SNEAK PEEK!! Oh yeah!
While we were on the Alaska Cruise, we got some really fun goodies - new stamps and stuff! Yeah, it's a great perk! One day we got to take our new stamps and go make some really cute samples with them. Here is my favorite of the ones we made:
Noooo, it's not a card. It's a mini photo album! Isn't it just the cutest?!!
This little cutie is using three of the new In Colors for next year, Island Indigo, Lucky Limeade and Pool Party along with a new stamp set that I can't remember the name of. Yes, really! Menopause brain is rearing it's ugly head and my new catalog is downstairs. You can't buy it yet anyway, so just be patient grasshopper. All good things in time.
But, if you are a member of one of my Party Groups, you'll get to make this fantastic project in July when we meet! Cool, eh? So, if you're NOT a member of a Party Group, guess you'd better get busy joining one, right? And hey, why not start your own? You meet once a month, my place or yours; stamp several projects, take turns being the "hostess" and getting freebies - plus a special gift from me, and have a lot of fun in the process. I sure hope you have a great day today. It's not supposed to be as hot here. Yesterday it got up to 104 degrees on my deck. Yeah, I spent most of the day in my studio. Nice and cool there. I'm headed out to the doctor - a necessary but unwelcome visit. I'm not a doctor kind of girl, but I'm sure glad they exist when you need one.
I hope you've all had a good week and have some fun plans for your weekend. Ours is pretty full - I know, what's new? - but it's all good! I'm really looking forward to getting our box garden cleaned out and replanted. We started one a few years ago when Emma decided she wanted to plant something. And unlike a lot of kid projects that become Mom and Dad projects, she actually tends it with us each year. We've enjoyed experimenting with different plants - the cantaloupe and tabasco peppers were epic fails - but our banana peppers and cherry tomatoes can't be beat! The best part is being able to just go in the back yard and pick fresh veggies for our dinner - awesome! So, if you have any good suggestions for new stuff to try, let me know, we're always up for an experiment!
So yesterday, I sat down to stamp and that gorgeous hydrangea stamp from Because I Care was still sitting out on my table. Between that and all that thinking about the garden led me to create this card:
and it just made my heart happy when I saw the end result! The combo of Pear Pizzazz and Poppy Parade just, well, worked! and I love it here!
Confession time - I have avoided the Poppy Parade In Color like the plague - in fact, I still have all three of my pre-order packs from last June. Every time I looked at it, I just thought "yukk!". But a couple of weeks ago, I was in Kohl's Department Store and bought a gorgeous short trench coat in that Poppy Parade color for the Alaska cruise. I couldn't believe I was buying something in that color, but girls, have you checked out the stores and fashion magazines this season? Poppy Parade is EVERYWHERE! Unavoidable! So I guess you could say that I've succumbed to the power of the Poppy. Like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. Oh Lord, I hope you get that reference!
Anyway, This card is pretty simple - Very Vanilla, Pear Pizzazz, Poppy Parade; combined with the First Edition DSP - which you MUST own! It's awesome paper! You can pretty much tell what I did with this card by looking at it. But here's a few details for you.
I used the Scallop Trim Border Punch on the bottom edge of the DSP and it's sponged as well as all the other Vanilla and Pear layers. The Pear Pizzazz Seam Binding is wrapped around the belly strip and then a second piece knotted around it with a small Vanilla Rosette flower attached with Mini Glue Dots.
I used the sneak peek stamp set Four Frames for the focal point - love this polka-dot frame! The greeting is from Because I Care and is simply stamped in the frame. I left enough room to add the small row of Pearls below it for a little bling. It's popped up on Stampin' Dimensionals above the ribbon.
And once again, I stamped a bit on the inside of the card too. Just a little love for the inside!
So, there you go - another card with that big ol' flower stamp, but an entirely different look - love it! Thanks for visiting today - I love to know you've been here, so leave me a comment and say hi, ok?
Hey there everyone - are you glad it's Friday? I actually can't believe it's Friday! This week has just flown by in our house. I've had Emma home three days this week, two for school closure and today she is home sick. Poor baby, she's had this awful cold/flu and just can't shake it. We took her to the doctor on Monday and even with the meds she got, she's still sick. As a Mom, don't you just want to take it all on yourself so they don't have to be miserable? I wish I could just snap my fingers and have her better, but hopefully the rest, extra sleep, meds and lots of love will heal her up soon.
Anyway, I have done a LOT of stamping this week - had my fun Firehouse stamp camp last night - and my downline meeting is tomorrow, so there has been lots to do! This card was really the easiest one from stamp camp last night, but easy doesn't mean ugly! I love clean and simple stamping! We used Very Vanilla cardstock and ran it through the Big Shot with the Elegant Bouquet embossing folder. Then we just sponged over it lightly with Pretty in Pink ink, bringing out the floral empression. The centers were colored in with the Early Espresso Stampin' Write Marker.
It's hard to see in the photos, but the stamped greeting - from the Punch Bunch stamp set - is actually stamped twice and layered. The bottom layer is just stamped in Early Espresso then punched out with the 1 3/4" Circle Punch. Then I cleaned the stamp and used my markers to color just the flowers and greeting. This was punched out with the 1 3/8" Circle Punch. I added a Pearl Jewel and popped it up on a dimensional before adhering it on top of the piece of Early Espresson Satin Ribbon. The ends of the ribbon are under the greeting so the ribbon looks pretty inside the card as well as the outside!
Stamping the envelope was a great final touch and I even sponged the edges with pink! Thanks for stopping by today - hope you like this little sneak peek!
Hello and happy Thursday everyone! This week has simply flown by here as I am playing mad catch up from being gone so long! As you read this in the morning, I am frantically cutting cardstock getting ready for my Stamp Camp tonight at the Manassas Volunteer Fire Company. I stamped and stamped and stamped some more yesterday creating cards especially for this fun camp and now I have got to be ready to stamp with my friends!
But, I also stamped something else yesterday..... Are you ready for a little glimpse of Summer?! Well, here ya' go!

I love the feelings that these lovely candles brought out, but in the end, I went with the colors - so bright and inviting. They made me think of Summer and since it's so cold here, I just went with it!
There is only one stamped piece on this card - the little greeting tag. I stamped it from Tiny Tags with Melon Mambo and punched it out with the Medium Jewelry Punch. It's just tucked into the flower for a sweet accent. I created the little bow with the Ice Cream Parlor Ribbon - yes, from Sale-A-Bration - it's such pretty ribbon, I know I'll be enjoying that a lot!
I used Whisper White and Old Olive cardstock, but everything else is designer paper or sticky die cuts from the gorgeous pack of supplies! Love these fun summery colors together and I love how this card came together in literally 15 minutes!
